No trains from Bracknell on Christmas Day, almost none on Boxing Day, and engineering works from 24 December to 4 January. What is confirmed so far, and when.

Bracknell has one railway line, South Western Railway’s route from Reading to London Waterloo through Ascot and Staines, so Christmas travel from the town comes down to what that line does. National Rail has published its 2026/27 framework: nothing runs on Christmas Day, almost nothing on Boxing Day, the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December, and engineering works run from Christmas Eve to 4 January. South Western Railway has not yet said which of those works touch the Reading line. Last year they did, closing the London end of the route for two days. The quick answer

National Rail’s Christmas period runs from Thursday 24 December 2026 to Monday 4 January 2027. There are no trains anywhere on Christmas Day, most operators run nothing on Boxing Day, and Monday 28 December is the substitute bank holiday with services still to be confirmed. Trains finish early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. South Western Railway will publish its own Christmas page from early October and only lists engineering works 12 weeks ahead, so the Bracknell detail lands in October. Last year the Waterloo to Clapham Junction section was closed on 27 and 28 December and Reading line trains terminated at Clapham Junction until 4 January.

What National Rail has confirmed for 2026/27

National Rail’s Christmas and New Year page for this year sets the national shape (National Rail, Christmas and New Year 2026/27):

  • Thursday 24 December: services on many routes finish earlier than normal. A guide to the last trains from London will be published in late November or early December.
  • Friday 25 December: no National Rail services, as usual.
  • Saturday 26 December: most operators have no service. A very limited service from a small number of operators is to be confirmed.
  • Monday 28 December: the substitute Boxing Day bank holiday. Which services run is to be confirmed.
  • Thursday 31 December: some routes finish early. After midnight, a number of London-area routes run special services into New Year’s Day; the guide follows in early December.
  • Operator-by-operator detail, including South Western Railway’s, is added to the National Rail page from the beginning of October.

South Western Railway’s own planned-improvements page says it shows engineering works only up to 12 weeks in advance, which puts the earliest full Christmas listing at the start of October (South Western Railway, planned improvements).

What last year looked like on the Bracknell line

South Western Railway’s Christmas page still describes 2025/26, and it is the best guide to how the operator treats the Reading line (South Western Railway, Christmas and New Year services):

  • Engineering work between London Waterloo and Clapham Junction ran from Saturday 27 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026, affecting both the main line via Wimbledon and the Windsor lines via Barnes, which is the route Bracknell trains use.
  • On 27 and 28 December there were no trains between Waterloo and Clapham Junction at all. Reading line services started and finished at Clapham Junction on an amended timetable.
  • Christmas Eve services ended early, with most Waterloo departures finished before 10pm.
  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day: no services on the whole SWR network.
  • New Year’s Eve: a revised service, with extra trains from Waterloo after midnight running from 1.20am through to 4.45am.
  • New Year’s Day: a reduced service, with everything via Barnes still starting and finishing at Clapham Junction.

The work was on track, switches and crossings, signalling and power supplies at Queenstown Road. Network Rail has not said whether it returns this Christmas. If it does, the pattern for Bracknell passengers is a change at Clapham Junction for the Underground or Overground into central London.

Buses

Thames Valley Buses, whose last change to its Bracknell and Wokingham services was on 2 August, had not published any Christmas or New Year timetable when we checked its news page on 25 September (Thames Valley Buses, news). Operators usually post festive timetables in early December. We will add them here.
